Whether you’re stepping onto a reformer for the first time or returning after a break, you’ll find a reformer pilates class that meets you at your level. What Is Reformer Pilates?

Understanding what is reformer pilates starts with the machine itself: a horizontal frame fitted with a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, a footbar, pulleys and straps. The machine was developed as part of the original Pilates system. It has since become one of the most widely used pieces of equipment in professional Pilates training.

Here’s how each component works. The sliding carriage is the platform you lie, sit, kneel or stand on. It moves along the frame on rails, creating a range of motion that challenges your stability and control throughout each movement. The springs connect the carriage to the frame and are the key to the system. They create adjustable resistance. This means the same exercise can be made gentler or more challenging simply by changing which springs are loaded. The footbar provides a stable surface to push against during leg and core work. The pulleys and straps are used for upper-body and full-body exercises, adding variety and range that mat-based Pilates cannot replicate.

The result is a training system with over 200 possible exercises. It is all built around controlled movements, precise alignment and breath. The focus is on mobility, flexibility, coordination and postural awareness.

In Dubai at BODIFY, beginner-friendly reformer pilates classes are open to all levels, taught by certified instructors who guide every movement with attention to your form and your body’s specific needs.

Reformer vs Mat Pilates — What’s the Difference?

Both reformer and mat pilates come from the same original system. Both versions develop posture and body awareness. The main difference between the two is the equipment, and that difference shapes absolutely everything about how a session feels.

Mat pilates uses body weight resistance on a mat. This is sometimes supported by small props like resistance bands or a small ball. It’s accessible for everyone and requires no equipment. This builds a solid foundation in both core engagement and breath work. Reformer pilates adds versatility with the machine. The reformer introduces the extra component of spring resistance, a moving platform and a completely different range of exercises.

The reformer’s spring system makes it very well suited to women who want a much more precise intensity control at various intensity levels. This includes lighter springs for mobility and recovery work, heavier springs for strengthening. Mat pilates is an excellent foundation and an effective practice on its own, but many women find that doing both gives them the best of each format.

Benefits of Reformer Pilates for Women

Reformer pilates offers a wide range of physical and mental benefits. For women in the 25–45 age range, many of those benefits address exactly the kinds of issues that come with a desk-heavy lifestyle, and the demanding schedule and years of high-impact training that is so common in Dubai.

On the physical side, regular reformer practice builds strength from the inside out. It focuses not just on the surface muscles, but also the deep stabilizers that support the spine and pelvis. As a result, many women see improved posture and alignment follow naturally, which is particularly useful for those who spend long hours working in front of a screen. The spring-resistance system develops lean muscle tone without bulk. At the same time, the full range of motion available on the machine increases flexibility and mobility.

Reformer pilates is joint-friendly because it is low-impact. That makes it appropriate after high-impact classes. It is also supportive during recovery periods and accessible for women who find heavy loading uncomfortable. For women with back discomfort, reformer work may help by strengthening the muscles that stabilize the spine and restoring your postural awareness. Always let your instructor know about any existing discomfort before class, and they will help you with any necessary back support.

Your balance and body awareness will improve noticeably over time. The movements on the pilates carriage require constant proprioceptive adjustment, which trains your nervous system as much as your muscles.

The mental benefits are just as real. Reformer pilates demands concentration. You have to be present the entire time, and be focused and connected to your breath throughout every set. That quality of attention is a genuine form of mindfulness. The combination of physical effort and mental focus is one of the most effective stress relief practices available. Women who train at BODIFY often describe leaving reformer sessions feeling calmer and more grounded than when they arrived.

Types of Reformer Pilates Classes at BODIFY

Not everyone comes to pilates reformer classes with the same goal. Some women are stepping onto the machine for the very first time and require clear, structured introduction. Others are ready to build intensity and work on endurance. BODIFY’s reformer pilates class schedule is designed to meet all of those needs with three distinct class formats.

Reformer Foundations

Designed for absolute beginners, Reformer Foundations introduces you to the machine and to the core principles of Pilates movement. These are breath, neutral spine, imprinting and controlled engagement. Reformer foundation sessions focus on machine orientation, basic footwork, and simple spring-loaded exercises. This builds body awareness from the ground up. Instructors give individual attention to your form. Modifications are available for every movement. By the end of your first few sessions at BODIFY, the machine will begin to feel familiar. Your understanding of your own movement patterns will be noticeably sharper.

Reformer Flow

Reformer Flow is an intermediate-level class. It links exercises into smooth sequences, shifting the emphasis from individual movements to transitions, as well as posture and full-body flexibility. The pace is measured rather than fast or rushed. This is where your technique deepens, and it's where women who have completed their reformer pilates foundations work start to develop real movement fluency. In these sessions, strength and spinal mobility are the primary focus. Longer holds and more complex positions are introduced as the class progresses.

Reformer Strong

Reformer Strong is the most advanced format on the schedule. It uses heavier spring resistance and dynamic movements. It has longer sequences to sculpt lean muscle tone, improve endurance and push your stability further. This class is suited to women with established reformer experience who want to push themselves for a more demanding session. The low-impact principles remain. There is no jumping and no aggressive loading, but the physical demand is much higher, and the results reflect that.

What to Expect in Your First Reformer Pilates Class

Here’s how a standard 50-minute beginner-friendly reformer pilates class is structured at our BODIFY studios.

Instructor introduction (5 min): Your certified Pilates instructor walks you through the machine. They will show you how the carriage moves, how the springs work, and where to position yourself for the first exercises of the class.

Warm-up and breathing (5 min): Light mobilization and breath work will prepare your spine and stabilizing muscles for the rest of the session.

Controlled movements on the carriage (35 min): This is the core of the class. In this section, you’ll move through a sequence of exercises that use the footbar, straps and pulleys. They cover leg and glute work, core engagement, alignment, upper-body strengthening, and spinal mobility. The instructor will help you with modifications if required.

Cool-down stretch (5 min): Targeted stretches for the hips, hamstrings, lower back and shoulders. At this moment you'll likely feel taller and more open through your spine than when you arrived.

Remember to wear fitted activewear, like leggings and a snug top work best. Loose fabric can catch in the springs. Grip socks are required for safety on the carriage. Bring your own or pick up a pair at the studio. Don't forget to bring water and a small towel, and make sure to arrive 10 minutes before the session starts.

After a class with one of our instructors, most women feel a slight shake in their muscles, and notice their core is engaged in a way that’s different from other workouts.

FAQ

  • Yes, absolutely. The reformer’s adjustable spring system lets you start at a gentle resistance level and progress at your own pace. Our instructors guide every movement and offer modifications, so you can feel safe and supported from your very first class — even with zero pilates experience.

  • Reformer pilates is performed on a specialized machine with springs, pulleys and a sliding carriage, which adds controlled resistance and support. Mat pilates uses body weight on a mat. The reformer enables a wider range of exercises and intensity levels, making each class versatile for any level.

  • Two to four classes per week is the most effective range for visible results. Most women notice improvements in posture, core strength and flexibility within 4–6 weeks of consistent practice. Even one weekly session creates steady progress when combined with other movement.

  • Fitted activewear works best — leggings and a snug top — to prevent loose fabric from catching in the machine. Grip socks are required for safety on the carriage; you can bring your own or pick up a pair at the studio. Water and a small towel are useful.

  • Reformer pilates supports the muscles that stabilize the spine and promotes proper alignment, which often helps relieve everyday back tension from long hours at a desk. Always inform your instructor about any existing discomfort before class so the workout can be modified for your needs.

  • Reformer pilates builds lean muscle, which gradually boosts your metabolism, and pairs well with cardio or other movement as part of a balanced routine. Combined with mindful eating, regular reformer practice supports a leaner, more toned physique over time.

  • We run reformer pilates classes at three Dubai locations: Dubai Marina, Internet City and Downtown Dubai. All three studios share the same timetable and certified instructors, so you can book whichever studio fits your day.
